Choosing a Club

Choosing The Right Taekwon-Do Club For YOU

There are many Taekwon-Do clubs out there. The right club for you comes down to personal choice – But what to look for? Below are a list of important things to consider when choosing a club.

Why Sumners Taekwon-Do?

There are many Taekwon-Do clubs in clubs in Gloucestershire & the West Midlands, and deciding which one to choose can be a daunting task. It is difficult to find out which clubs are of the highest standards. Here is our guide on what to look for and ask when considering joining a club.

Choosing a Taekwon-Do club

Is the club a member of a reputable nationally recognised governing body?

Sumners Taekwon-Do is a member of Global Taekwon-Do United Kingdom (GTUK) and the British Taekwondo Council (BTC).

GTUK is one of the largest Taekwon-Do associations in Britain. Its founder and president is Grand-Master Oldham, who holds the rank of 9th degree black belt and who took part in the Britain’s very first Taekwon-Do black belt grading test. Grand-Master Oldham maintains a very “hands on” role within the GTUK and regularly visits Sumners Taekwon-Do in order to grade our coloured belt students as well as presiding over all GTUK Black Belt tests.

BTC is the only Taekwon-Do organisation in Britain to be officially recognised by the Sports Council.

Does the club have a Welfare Officer?

The Welfare Officer acts as the first point of contact for anyone in the club (children, parents, adults, coaching staff and volunteers) for concerns about poor practice or the safety of our students. Our Welfare Officer is Mrs Glenis Sumners who holds a current DBS and is fully trained in Child Protection and Safeguarding.

Is the coaching team suitably qualified?

Chief Instructor Mr Dirk Sumners has been involved in Taekwon-Do since the early 90’s and holds the rank of 4th Degree International Instructor. He is a fully-qualified and registered instructor with both GTUK and BTC. He holds a current DBS and is a qualified first-aider and first-aid trainer. He holds a Level 3 Award in Education and Training is the GTUK First-Aid Officer and is a member of the GTUK Black Belt Grading Panel.

All of our Black Belt Coaches & Assistants have received GTUK Instructor Training.

Mr Sumners holds £10M public liability & £5M professional indemnity insurances.

Are there trained first-aiders present at all lessons?

Mr Sumners is a qualified first-aider and so are many of his students. As a qualified First Aid Instructor, Mr Sumners holds first-aid training courses for interested students on a regular basis.

You can rely on Sumners Taekwon-Do to offer excellent training in a stimulating & safe environment.
